Chemistry may be defined as the science that is concerned with the composition and the structure of matter, and the forces that holds the structure together.
Chemistry as a science has its primary objective; the determination of the nature and properties of the non-living matter, which surroinds us and the preparation of new substances.
Scientifically interesting, or generally useful from the materials which nature has provided in trying to determine the nature of substances, it probes into principles governing the changes that matter undergoes, when subjected to conditions which they do not encounter normally such as high temperature, high pressure, contact with other materials under different condition.
The focus of chemistry however is probably on the chemical reaction i.ethe characterization, composition and transformation of matter. The interest of chemistry extends to every conceiveable form of these transformations by chemical reaction.
The three main branches of chemistry are:
*Physical Chemistry
**Inorganic chemistry
***Organic chemistry
There in addition, other branches such as’
*+Biochemistry which deals with the effect of chemicals on living cells.
*+Medicinal Chemistry which deals with the physiological active compounds such as aspirin, chloroquine, etc.
*+Industrial chemistry which considers the application of chemistry in industries.
*+Environmental chemistry which investigate the possible effect of chemistry on the environment.
The study of chemistry helps us acquire knowledge about matter. Being an experimental science, we perform experiments, learn to observe, record and make intelligent inference.
Chemistry has contributed greatly to the provision of our basic needs and improving the qualities of our lives.
